As a Shetlander living in Mid Wales, my artistic journey has been deeply influenced by the unique landscapes and cultures that surround me. Studying MA Fine Art at Aberystwyth School of Art has provided me with a formal framework to refine my skills, but my passion for art began long before my academic pursuits. From an early age, I have used whatever was at hand to make marks and draw my world, finding in art the essential elements of life like air, food, and water.
Art for me is more than a practice; it is a fundamental part of my being. It has been enlightening not only in shaping my identity as an artist but also in understanding who I am as a person. This continuous exploration has led me to constantly study the world around me, paying close attention to its textures and the myriad shades of colour that define our environment.
My artworks are deeply inspired by the natural elements that I encounter daily. I am particularly captivated by the textures and fluidity of water, which I strive to capture in my pieces. The ever-changing nature of water, its movement, and the play of light and shadow on its surface, offer an endless source of inspiration and challenge. Each piece I create aims to evoke the same sense of wonder and dynamism that I find in these natural phenomena.
Living between the rugged beauty of Shetland and the serene landscapes of Mid Wales has given me a unique perspective that I bring into my art. This duality is reflected in my work, which often merges the raw and the refined, the wild and the tranquil. My artistic practice involves a constant dialogue with my surroundings, interpreting and reinterpreting the textures, colours, and forms I observe.
Art is an essential part of my life, a way to make sense of the world and to communicate my experiences and emotions. As I continue my journey, I am committed to exploring new artistic territories and to contributing to the vibrant tapestry of the art community. Through my work, I hope to inspire others to see the beauty and complexity of the world around us.
